October Home Checklist: Get Your House Ready Before Winter
Before the first major snow arrives, take some time to walk around your property and make sure your home is ready.
1. Clean Your Gutters
Leaves and debris can quickly build up in gutters during the fall.
A clogged gutter can prevent water from draining properly and may contribute to water problems around the foundation, siding, roofline, or landscaping.
Make gutter cleaning one of your October priorities.
2. Check Your Roof
You don't need to climb onto your roof to give it a basic inspection.
From the ground, look for missing or damaged shingles, sagging areas, damaged flashing, or anything that looks different from normal.
If something looks questionable, have a qualified professional take a closer look.
3. Disconnect Outdoor Hoses
Before freezing temperatures arrive, disconnect garden hoses and make sure outdoor faucets are properly prepared.
A little preventive maintenance can help avoid expensive repairs later.
4. Check Your Heating System
October is a good time to schedule heating-system maintenance if you haven't already.
Replace filters as needed and make sure vents aren't blocked by furniture, rugs, or other items.
If you use a fireplace or wood stove, make sure it has been properly inspected and cleaned according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
5. Seal Up Drafts
Walk around your home and look for places where cold air could enter.
Pay attention to:
- Doors
- Windows
- Basement areas
- Attic access
- Utility penetrations
- Garage entry doors
Small improvements can make your home more comfortable during the winter months.
6. Take a Look at Your Driveway & Walkways
Cracks that seem minor in October can become more noticeable after repeated freezing and thawing.
Check your driveway, walkways, steps, and railings now — especially if anything already looks worn or unstable.
7. Don't Forget Your Landscaping
Trim branches that could potentially become a problem during winter storms and remove dead or damaged limbs.
Fall is also a great time to clean up gardens and prepare outdoor spaces for the next season.
Your October Maintenance List Can Also Become a Selling List
If you're thinking about selling your home sometime in the next year, October maintenance can be especially useful.
Instead of waiting until you're ready to list, start keeping a running list of repairs and improvements.
Then you can prioritize projects based on what will make the biggest difference.
Not every home improvement needs to be completed before selling — and not every project will provide the same return.

One More October Tip: Take Pictures
This sounds simple, but take a few photos of your home now.
Photograph the exterior, landscaping, deck, patio, gardens, and any areas that look particularly nice in the fall.
If you decide to sell later, those photos can provide a useful record of your property and its seasonal appearance.
And more importantly, October is a great reminder that a little maintenance now can make winter a lot easier.
