Fall Weekend Guide: 10 Ways to Enjoy the Seacoast Without Leaving the Area
You Don't Have to Go Far to Have a Great Fall Weekend
When the leaves start changing, it's tempting to plan a big weekend getaway.
But if you live in the Seacoast region, there are plenty of ways to enjoy fall without packing the car for hours.
From Portsmouth and Dover to Rochester, Exeter, the coast, and Southern Maine, autumn is a great time to explore the communities right around you.
And if you're thinking about buying a home in the area, there's an added benefit: exploring local communities can help you figure out which one actually feels like home.
Here are 10 ideas to put on your local fall list.
1. Explore a New Downtown
Spend an afternoon walking around a community you've never really explored.
Try a new restaurant, visit a local shop, grab a coffee, and see what makes the town unique.
Portsmouth is an obvious fall destination, with its historic downtown, waterfront, restaurants, shops, and cultural attractions.
Explore the City of Portsmouth
Dover is another great option, with downtown restaurants, shops, the Cochecho River, parks, and community events throughout the year.

And don't overlook Rochester. Downtown Rochester continues to offer local events, restaurants, businesses, and community activities throughout the year.
2. Take a Scenic Drive
New Hampshire and Southern Maine are full of roads that look completely different once the foliage arrives.
Take the long way home.
You may discover a neighborhood, small town, farm stand, trail, or scenic overlook you didn't know much about.
New Hampshire's official tourism site even has a Seacoast fall road-trip guide featuring destinations throughout Dover, Lee, Epping, Stratham, Rye, and other nearby communities.

It's a great reminder that you don't have to travel far to find something new.
3. Visit a Local Farm
Fall is prime time for pumpkins, apples, cider, farm stands, corn mazes, and seasonal events.
And the Seacoast has plenty of options.
Coppal House Farm in Lee, for example, is featured by Visit NH as a fall destination with its annual corn maze.
You can also find seasonal farms and agricultural destinations throughout the surrounding communities.
One of the best parts of living in this area is having access to both coastal communities and rural New Hampshire just a short drive apart.
4. Explore a Local Trail
You don't need a huge mountain hike to enjoy fall foliage.
A local walking trail can provide plenty of color, fresh air, and a reason to get outside.
Portsmouth's Recreation Department offers fall programming and outdoor opportunities throughout the season.
Explore Portsmouth Recreation & Parks
And communities throughout the Seacoast have their own parks, conservation areas, trails, and outdoor spaces.
When you're considering where to buy a home, these amenities are worth paying attention to.
A nearby trail or park may become one of your favorite parts of living in a particular community.
5. Grab Coffee Somewhere New
Pick a town you've been meaning to explore, find a local coffee shop, and spend an hour walking around afterward.
Try Dover.
Try Portsmouth.
Try Exeter.
Try Rochester.
Or cross the border and explore Kittery, York, South Berwick, or another Southern Maine community.
Sometimes the best way to learn whether you like a community is simply to spend some time there.
6. Attend a Community Event
Fall calendars throughout the Seacoast are packed with festivals, markets, Halloween events, craft fairs, community gatherings, and family activities.
For example, Portsmouth's Fall Family Fun Fest is scheduled for October 24, 2026, at Community Campus, with music, games, food trucks, s'mores, and family activities.
Portsmouth also has citywide Trick-or-Treat scheduled for October 30.

Dover has plenty happening in October as well.
The Dover Pumpkin Stroll is scheduled for October 24 at the Joe B. Parks Riverwalk Public Garden, where hundreds of glowing pumpkins will be part of the evening event.

7. Visit the Coast
Fall can be one of the best times to visit the New Hampshire and Maine coastline.
The crowds are lighter, temperatures are cooler, and the scenery changes dramatically.
Spend some time in Rye, Hampton, Portsmouth, Kittery, York, or Wells and see which coastal communities feel like your kind of place.
Even if you're not looking to move, it's a great way to spend a fall afternoon.
And if you are considering a move, pay attention to the things you enjoy about each community.
Do you want to walk to restaurants?
Be close to the beach?
Have a larger yard?
Be closer to downtown?
Or have a quieter setting while remaining within driving distance of the coast?
Those preferences can make a big difference when you're choosing a home.
8. Explore the Lakes Region
You don't have to wait until summer to visit the lakes.
Fall foliage around the water can be spectacular.
Lake Winnipesaukee, Lake Winnisquam, Squam Lake, Merrymeeting Lake, Milton Three Ponds, Lake Wentworth, and the surrounding Lakes Region communities all offer a very different experience once the summer crowds disappear.
For anyone considering a lake property, fall is also a great time to see what the area feels like outside of peak summer.
How quiet is the road?
How accessible is the property?
What does the neighborhood look like after summer?
How far are restaurants and everyday conveniences?
Those details matter if you're thinking about owning a year-round lake home.

9. Look at Homes — Even If You're Not Ready to Buy
This one might sound a little obvious coming from a real estate team, but attending an open house can actually be a useful way to learn about the local market.
You don't have to be ready to make an offer.
You can use open houses to see:
- What different price points look like
- Which neighborhoods interest you
- What features are common in local homes
- How much space your budget could provide
- Which renovations seem worthwhile
- What you like — and don't like — in a home
It can also help you understand the difference between communities.
A $600,000 home in one town may look very different from a $600,000 home somewhere else.

10. Find a New Favorite Local Spot
The Seacoast is full of small businesses, restaurants, trails, beaches, farms, parks, and communities worth exploring.
You don't always have to travel somewhere new.
Sometimes you just need to look at where you already live a little differently.
Try a restaurant you've never visited.
Take a different route home.
Visit a town you've only driven through.
Go to a local event.
Walk somewhere you've never explored.
You may be surprised by what you find.
That's Part of What Makes This Area Special
Real estate isn't just about houses.
It's about where those houses are located and what life looks like once you step outside your front door.
That's why community information is such an important part of the home-buying process.
A home might check every box on paper, but if the surrounding community doesn't fit your lifestyle, it may not be the right long-term choice.
On the other hand, you may discover a community you hadn't originally considered that checks far more boxes than you expected.
If you're thinking about moving to the Seacoast, Lakes Region, or Southern Maine, spend some time exploring the communities before making your decision.
